The question we started with

THE QUESTION #

Why do rivers develop looping bends instead of flowing in straight lines?

Water runs downhill, and the shortest way downhill is a straight line. Yet a river on a flat plain wanders in loops, sometimes travelling three kilometres of channel to advance one down the valley.

The usual explanation is that it is going around obstacles. But meanders form in laboratory flumes of uniform sand, deliberately prepared to contain no obstacles at all. So where do the bends come from?

Reasoning it through

Ask a different question: not why a river bends, but whether a straight one could stay straight. Suppose something trivial disturbs it — a fallen branch, a softer patch of bank — and the flow is deflected a little. Does that deflection heal, or grow?

Watch where the water swings toward one bank. Its momentum carries it to the outside of the bend and the water surface tilts up against that bank; the pressure difference sets up a corkscrew, moving water outward near the surface, down the outer bank, and back inward along the bed. That near-bed return flow drags sand and gravel from the outer bank to the inner one.

So the outer bank retreats while sediment piles up on the slack inner side as a point bar — which makes the bend sharper still. The disturbance does not heal, it amplifies itself. That is a positive feedback, and it means the answer to "why not straight" is that straight is unstable, not that curved is preferred.

What stops the bends growing without limit? As a loop swells, the neck of land between its two ends narrows, until a flood cuts across it; the loop is abandoned as a crescent-shaped oxbow lake and the river's length drops.

Stir a cup of tea and the leaves gather in the middle rather than being flung to the rim: the surface rises at the rim, that pressure difference drives a slow inward current along the bottom, and the current sweeps the leaves inward. This is not merely similar to a river bend — it is the same secondary flow, and Einstein wrote it up in 1926 precisely to explain meandering.

Clarifying the model

THE MODEL #

The outer bank is not simply "eroded by fast water": the undercutting is largely done by the helical flow, and the bank then collapses once its toe is removed — so bank strength, meaning roots and clay, matters as much as flow speed.

And an honest caveat: meandering also appears in channels carrying no sediment at all, such as meltwater streams cut into glacier ice, so sediment exchange between banks cannot be the whole cause. What first sets the wavelength of the bends remains an active area of modelling.
